What Is the WisMesh 1W Booster Starter Kit?

The WisMesh 1W Booster Starter Kit is a complete, ready-to-run high-power US915 Meshtastic node designed for long-range mesh communication, repeaters, solar-powered deployments, and custom integrated systems.

It combines the RAK3401 WisBlock Core Module, powered by the Nordic nRF52840 MCU, with the RAK13302 1W LoRa Booster Module and the expandable RAK19007 WisBlock Base Board. The RAK13302 uses a Semtech SX1262 transceiver, SKY66122 power amplifier, and dedicated RF filtering to support RF output of up to 1W, approximately 30 dBm.

The module is available in two hardware versions:

  • Using a battery with the WisBlock Base Board (recommended to have USB or Solar Charging 5V for continuous operation).
  • External 5 V supply via its power connector.

NOTE: This has changed from the previous version of the RAK13302 module where you could select the power source. In the new hardware version, you cannot switch anymore between the two power sources. There are two different modules, one for battery supply and one for external 5V supply. Make sure you order the correct version.

Both versions provide the same Meshtastic firmware compatibility, RF architecture, expansion options, kit components, and potential radio performance. The only difference is how the amplifier receives its required 5V supply. Unlike standalone 1W LoRa boards that require a separate MCU, baseboard, power system, and accessories, this kit provides a complete WisBlock platform that can be configured as a ready-to-run Meshtastic node.

Important Regulatory Note

This product provides high RF output capability at the hardware level. Actual operating parameters such as frequency band, transmit power, and antenna configuration are defined by firmware settings and user configuration.

Transmit power limits, allowable frequency plans, duty cycle rules, and antenna gain restrictions vary by country and region.

It is the user’s responsibility to configure this device (frequency plan, TX power, antenna, duty cycle) in compliance with local spectrum regulations.

Why You Need the WisMesh 1W Booster Starter Kit

Long-distance mesh deployments often require better link consistency, simpler assembly, and a power arrangement suited to the installation. Two power versions let users select the appropriate setup without changing RF performance or expansion options.

Why it’s useful:

  • Simpler version selection: Choose battery power for standalone nodes or external 5V for existing DC systems.
  • Fewer sourced components: Build a complete Meshtastic node without selecting separate radio, baseboard, antenna, and amplifier parts.
  • Flexible deployment planning: Use the same radio platform across portable, solar-powered, cabinet-mounted, and sensor-integrated installations.
  • Easier future expansion: Add WisBlock sensors, GPS, displays, or other modules as project requirements develop.
  • Consistent fleet performance: Deploy both power versions without introducing different firmware, radio behavior, or configuration workflows.

Why Choose the WisMesh 1W Booster Starter Kit for your Meshtastic network?

Whether you are upgrading an existing Meshtastic node or building a new long-range deployment, the WisMesh 1W Booster Starter Kit provides a complete US915 platform for outdoor, off-grid, solar-powered, and system-integrated mesh networks.

Both versions use the same RAK3401 WisBlock Core, Nordic nRF52840 MCU, RAK19007 Base Board, and RAK13302 1W LoRa Booster Module. The SX1262 transceiver, SKY66122 power amplifier, and integrated RF filter support RF output levels up to approximately 1W or 30 dBm, subject to firmware settings and local regulations.

Unlike standalone 1W LoRa breakout boards, this kit combines the processor, high-power radio, power management, antennas, accessories, and WisBlock expansion slots into a complete, ready-to-run Meshtastic node. Because both versions use the full WisBlock Base Board, you can stack compatible WisBlock sensors, GNSS modules, displays, and other expansion modules without rebuilding the core node.

Range & RF Performance

Both versions of the WisMesh 1W Booster Starter Kit use the same RF architecture and deliver identical radio performance. The Semtech SX1262 LoRa transceiver is paired with a Skyworks SKY66122 power amplifier and a dedicated SAW filter to support hardware RF output levels up to 1W, approximately 30 dBm.

Unlike standalone high-power boards that focus only on transmit amplification, the RAK13302 uses a filtered RF path designed to support both stronger transmission and dependable receive performance. This helps reduce unwanted out-of-band energy and maintain a cleaner signal path for more stable two-way Meshtastic communication.

The battery-powered and external-powered versions provide the same range potential, receiver performance, firmware compatibility, and RF output capability. The only difference is how the SKY66122 amplifier receives its required 5V supply. Actual performance depends on configured transmit power, antenna type and placement, terrain, interference, node height, Meshtastic modem settings, and local regulatory limits.

Regulatory & Configuration Responsibility

The WisMesh 1W Booster Starter Kit is designed for the US915 configuration and provides hardware support for RF output levels up to approximately 1W.

Actual operating parameters are defined through firmware and user configuration, including:

  • Frequency plan
  • Transmit power
  • Duty cycle
  • Channel configuration
  • Antenna type
  • Antenna gain

Users are responsible for configuring and operating the device in accordance with applicable local spectrum regulations.

This product is FCC-certified for operation in the US915 frequency band. Operation must comply with FCC regulations, including applicable transmit power, antenna, and frequency requirements. FCC ID: 2AF6B-13302.

Power Requirements & Thermal Notes

The 1W RF stage in the RAK13302 requires a stable 5V supply. It cannot operate correctly from a standard 3.3V rail because the power amplifier requires higher voltage and current during transmission.

Power delivery depends on the selected version:

  • Battery Powered: The amplifier receives 5V from the RAK19007 Base Board and the onboard battery system. USB or compatible solar charging can be used to recharge the battery and support unattended operation.
  • External Powered: The amplifier receives 5V directly from a user-provided regulated DC source through the RAK13302’s dedicated power connector.

The external-powered version must not be connected directly to 12V, 24V, or AC power. These sources require a suitable regulated 5V converter.

Higher transmit power increases current consumption and heat generation. Battery capacity, charging capacity, message frequency, duty cycle, enclosure ventilation, and configured transmit power should be considered when planning continuous or high-duty-cycle deployments.

How the 1W RF Chain Works

The WisMesh 1W Booster Starter Kit uses the following staged RF architecture:

nRF52840 → SX1262 → SKY66122 power amplifier → SAW filter → antenna

The Nordic nRF52840 MCU on the RAK3401 runs Meshtastic firmware, manages Bluetooth connectivity, and communicates with the SX1262 transceiver.

The SX1262 generates and receives the US915 LoRa signal. During transmission, the signal is amplified by the SKY66122 and then passed through the integrated SAW filter to reduce unwanted harmonics and out-of-band energy before reaching the antenna.

During reception, the filtered RF path helps maintain signal clarity and dependable receiver performance. This architecture supports more stable two-way communication across long-distance, semi-obstructed, and off-grid Meshtastic deployments.

An integrated Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) helps strengthen weak incoming signals before they reach the receiver, improving signal reception and supporting more reliable communication, especially in long-range or low-signal environments.

Both power versions use the same RF chain. The battery-powered version supplies the amplifier through the baseboard and onboard battery system, while the externally powered version supplies it directly from an existing regulated 5V DC source.
