What is the 1W Module for LoRa?

The 1W Module for LoRa with SX1262 + SKY66122 Booster is a WisBlock add-on for extending Meshtastic, LoRa P2P, and LoRaWAN® links. It combines the Semtech SX1262 transceiver, SKY66122 RF front-end booster, and an integrated RF filter to provide up to 1W (approximately 30 dBm) transmit power with improved receiver sensitivity.

The module mounts on a compatible WisBlock IO slot and adds higher-power radio capability to an existing WisBlock or WisMesh design. It is not a complete node; a compatible WisBlock Core, baseboard, antenna, and power source are also required.

Two versions provide the same RF performance but use different power arrangements:

  • Battery Powered: An onboard boost circuit generates the amplifier’s required 5V from the baseboard supply.
  • External 5V DC Input: The amplifier receives regulated 5V DC through a dedicated module connector.

Compatibility Note

Due to its higher power consumption, the RAK13302 1W Module for LoRa requires a 5 V supply and cannot operate from 3.3 V alone. The module is available in two hardware versions:

  • Using a battery with the WisBlock Base Board (recommended to have USB or Solar Charging 5V for continuous operation).
  • External 5 V supply via its power connector

NOTE: This changed from the previous version of the RAK13302 module, where you could select the power source. In the new hardware version, you cannot switch anymore between the two power sources; there are two different modules, one for battery supply and one for external 5V supply. Make sure you order the correct version.

Note: This module is approved for the US915 LoRaWAN band (United States). Due to transmission power restrictions in other regions (e.g., EU), the 863-870 MHz variant should not be used with the possible maximum transmission power.

Why You Need the 1W Module for LoRa

The module helps maintain communication where standard-power nodes struggle with distance, terrain, sparse coverage, or obstructions. Its modular format also lets teams strengthen an existing WisBlock deployment without redesigning the complete node.

Why it’s useful:

  • Fewer Coverage Gaps: Keeps distant or obstructed nodes reachable across demanding deployment areas.
  • Simpler Upgrades: Adds higher-power communication without replacing the existing modular node design.
  • Flexible Power Planning: Supports self-powered nodes and integrations with an available regulated supply.
  • More Consistent Links: Reduces retransmissions and intermittent connectivity across weak communication paths.
  • Expandable Deployments: Leaves room for sensors, positioning, and other WisBlock functions on one platform.

Key Features of the 1W Module for LoRa

  • Based on Semtech’s SX1262 LoRa chip (offers lower receive power and stronger integration for modern long-range deployments)
  • Includes SKY66122 booster for LoRa connectivity
  • Compliant with LoRaWAN specification
  • Supports 902–928 MHz and 863-870 MHz
  • Activation by OTAA/ABP
  • 1W LoRa module for LoRaWAN and (Point-to-Point) P2P connectivity
  • Meshtastic firmware compatible
  • Supply Voltage: 5.0 V
  • Operating Temp: –40 °C to 85 °C

Heltec LoRa Node Modules

Output Power

1 W (≈ Class 30 dBm) with dedicated booster (SKY66122)

~1 W (32 dBm) on T-Beam 1W version.

Typically lower power (e.g., 21–28 dBm in V3/V4 boards)

Chipset / Architecture

Semtech SX1262 + SKY66122 booster, 5 V supply

Uses SX127x (SX1276/1278) in many boards.

Uses SX1262 in newer boards.

Supply Voltage

Requires 5 V due to 1 W output stage

Varies (often 3.3 V or battery)

Mostly standard node voltage (3.3 V)

Ecosystem Focus

Modular upgrade path, WisBlock/WisMesh ecosystem, Meshtastic compatibility

Dev-board approach, ESP32 + LoRa board, less upgrade, modular component focus

Developer module board, IoT dev-board focus rather than high-power module

Differentiators

High-power 1W module, receives boost and filter for better sensitivity, upgrade path for users already in the ecosystem

Boards with 1W output exist, but may be less modular or less ecosystem-upgrade focused

Strong dev-board environment, but not always 1W or upgrade-path module oriented

Key Takeaways

Best for modular, high-power deployments

Better for prototyping, not scaling

Better for prototyping, not scaling

Use Case Examples for 1W Module for LoRa

Ideal for IoT networks that demand strong signal performance and long-distance communication in real-world environments.

Use Case #1: Long-Range Environmental Monitoring

A smart agriculture team deployed LoRa-based field sensors powered by this 1W module for LoRa connectivity to collect data across wide farmlands. The 1W transmission power ensured uninterrupted coverage in remote areas.

Use Case #2: City-Wide Lighting Control

A municipal project used the WisBlock 1W LoRa Module to link hundreds of streetlights under one network. The high receiver sensitivity allowed consistent operation across urban blocks.
