What Are the WisBlock Core Modules?
The WisBlock Core Modules provide the processing and wireless communication functions of a WisBlock-based IoT device, allowing developers to select computing and connectivity capabilities according to application requirements.
The range covers low-power and higher-performance processors with connectivity options including LoRa®, LoRaWAN®, WiFi, and BLE. Choices include the following modules:
Nordic nRF5x-Based WisBlock Core Modules
A low-power WisBlock Core built around the Nordic nRF52840 MCU and Semtech SX126x LoRa radio. It combines LoRaWAN and BLE connectivity for remote sensing, telemetry, and battery-powered IoT nodes. The module supports common embedded interfaces and is available for development with RUI3 and Arduino-based workflows.
This nRF52840-based WisBlock Core is designed for BLE-focused, low-power wireless applications that do not require an integrated LoRa transceiver. It provides local wireless connectivity together with interfaces for sensors and peripherals, making it suitable for BLE sensing, control, configuration, and short-range connected devices.
RP2040-Based WisBlock Core Modules
A WisBlock Core based on the Raspberry Pi RP2040 MCU and Semtech SX1262 LoRa transceiver. It combines dual-core embedded processing with connectivity on LoRa and LoRaWAN, providing a flexible platform for custom firmware, sensor nodes, and applications that benefit from the RP2040 development ecosystem.
STM32WLE5CC-Based WisBlock Core Modules
A low-power WisBlock Core based on the STM32WLE5CC, which integrates MCU and long-range radio functions within a single architecture. It supports LoRaWAN and point-to-point LoRa communication. It can also operate with custom RUI3 firmware or as a modem controlled by an external host through supported command interfaces.
Apollo3-Based WisBlock Core Modules
An ultra-low-power WisBlock Core combining the Ambiq Apollo3 MCU with a Semtech SX1262 LoRa transceiver and integrated BLE capability. It suits battery-powered sensing, remote monitoring, and compact IoT devices that require both long-range LoRaWAN communication and local BLE connectivity.
Multi-Radio WisBlock Core Modules with WiFi Connectivity
A multi-connectivity WisBlock Core combining an ESP32-S3 dual-core processor with the SX1262 LoRa transceiver. Integrated LoRaWAN, WiFi, and BLE support allows one core to handle long-range telemetry, local wireless communication, and IP connectivity. Its higher processing capability also suits edge processing, graphical interfaces, and more demanding embedded applications.
A compact dual-MCU WisBlock Core that combines an STM32WLE5 for LoRa and LoRaWAN communication with an Espressif ESP32-C2-based modem for Wi-Fi and BLE. This architecture supports applications that need long-range telemetry and local or network connectivity, while keeping processing and wireless functions within one modular core.
Combined with WisBlock Base, Sensor, and IO modules, these Core Modules let teams configure devices around specific processing, connectivity, and power requirements without designing a custom PCB for every application.
Options range from BLE-only operation to combined LoRaWAN, WiFi, and BLE connectivity, supporting applications such as remote sensing, building automation, edge processing, and battery- or solar-powered IoT nodes that require an embedded wireless module.
Trademark Notice: LoRa is a trademark of Semtech Corporation. LoRaWAN is a mark used under license from the LoRa Alliance.
Why You Need WisBlock Core Modules
The WisBlock Core Modules help teams match processing and connectivity to each application while retaining a common modular hardware platform, making it easier to develop, validate, modify, and deploy different IoT device configurations. Teams can also select a low-power IoT module when energy consumption is a primary deployment consideration.
Why it’s useful:
- Application flexibility: Choose connectivity and processing capabilities according to each device's requirements.
- Simpler hardware development: Build different device configurations without redesigning the complete hardware platform.
- Easier expansion: Add compatible sensing and interface functions as application requirements evolve.
- Deployment versatility: Support connected devices ranging from local BLE systems to remote IoT nodes.
