What Is WisGate Connect Smart Building
WisGate Connect Smart Building is a Raspberry Pi CM4-based IoT gateway built around the RAK7391 carrier board for smart buildings, smart homes, and office environments. It connects appliances and building systems through LoRaWAN®, Zigbee, Bluetooth, BACnet IP, and KNX, helping teams manage mixed wired and wireless deployments from one compact edge device. Its PoE+ support reduces cabling, while the aluminum enclosure supports fanless passive cooling for quiet operation.
Why You Need WisGate Connect Smart Building
Building teams need a reliable way to connect devices, reduce installation complexity, and run local services without adding multiple gateways. This setup helps simplify deployments while keeping future expansion practical.
Why it's useful:
- Simpler deployment: Combines multiple building control needs into one manageable gateway.
- Cleaner installations: Reduces cable clutter and supports desktop, cabinet, or utility-room placement.
- Local processing: Runs applications near devices to reduce cloud dependency.
- Flexible scaling: Supports changing automation needs without replacing the full gateway setup.

Software
We have prepared a custom Linux distribution for the WisGate Connect called RAKPiOS. The RAKPiOS is a fork of the Raspberry Pi OS with all the required drivers to use the device, some security changes, helper scripts and Docker included by default.
With the included rakpios-cli you can easily configure the network and deploy several IoT services from a curated list of docker containers available from the device.
Use Case Examples of WisGate Connect Smart Building
Teams can use WisGate Connect Smart Building to connect automation systems, monitor conditions, and test building improvements before wider deployment.
Use Case #1: Office Energy Monitoring Upgrade
A facility team had uneven device visibility, with baseline manual checks taking 40 minutes per floor. They installed WisGate Connect Smart Building, tested readings against meter logs for 14 days, cut review time by 65%, and achieved 96% repeatable data capture. Production notes showed 28/30 tested devices connected consistently.
Use Case #2: Smart Apartment Access and Sensor Trial
Maintenance staff managed separate access, sensor, and room-status systems, causing eight weekly follow-up visits. WisGate Connect Smart Building centralized the trial setup, verified performance through three controlled occupancy tests, reduced callbacks by 50%, and maintained 94% repeatability across 20 units. Production notes recorded stable yield after two configuration passes.
